Last monday I spent discovering Lisbon. Firstly I went to Arco da Rua Augusta, which is located on Praça do Comércio. It was built to memorate the city´s reconstruction after the big earthquake that took place in 1755. Entering the top of the arch you will see beautiful view of the Lisbon.
After that I went to see Convento da Ordem do Carmo, a former convent located in the heart of Chiado – one of the most known areas in Lisbon. Former because now there are just ruins of this large gothic church. Maybe just is not a proper word to describe this place – it looks really unique.
The church was built in 1389 and ruined in 1755 during the earthquake which is said to be one of the greatest in the history of Europe. The earthquake took place on 1st of November , All Saint´s Day and in combination with tsunami and fires completely destroyed Lisbon and southern parts of Portugal. Despite the tragedy, roofless church overlooking the sky looks very unique and reminds the damage caused by the power of earthquake.
Nowadays we can find there also Carmo Archeological Museum – small but worth visiting.
To end the day I went to Miradouro da Graça to watch the sunset.
