Observatório de aves

Before I came here I was excited that near Miratejo there is Observatório de aves, where  there is a possibility to see flamingos. I have been crazy about bird watching since I was a kid so for me it was a good opportunity to keep my hobby alive.

Last week I saw flamingos near this observatorium and it was my first time. Unfortunately the observatory was occupied by someone so I was forced to take some pictures in open space with hot sun and mosquitos. But I’m planning to go to this place again because beyond the flamingos there are many more birds to watch and they are different from these I saw in Poland.

Before I show you pictures of birds that I took in Poland I would like to share with you some tips that might be useful during birdwatching.

  1. Don’t interrupt their life. It might be obvious but our presence near them might be bad for them. They might leave their nests and babies even. By these words I mean: do not force them to do things for your good pictures and also mute your devices. You can bring your friend to observe birds but don´t talk too much and too loud. You are at their home.
  2. Take: notebook, waterproof pen, small book about birds that you can find in this location, binoculars, camera if you want to, something for mosquitos, extra clothes (weather might change).
  3. Be sure that your devices are loaded and not broken because there is nothing more frustrating than no SD card in your camera or not loaded camera at all.

And that is all! So simple. There are many groups that organize birdwatching actions also in Portugal and you can find them easily on the web. For example this site , where you can find out where to watch birds in Portugal and much more useful information.

I heard that the best area in Portugal for watching birds is the south of the country. I hope I will have an occasion to visit some places there and take pictures of birds that are not common in Poland, learn about their natural environment, daily life, and learn their portuguese names.
