How to be an explorer or how to adapt to new environment when moving?

When I came to Portugal I, of course, knew that this is the country of explorers and travelers. Frenando Magellan, Vasco da Gama or Pedro Alvares Cabral are the well known names. What is connecting them I think is curiosity and being brave enough to go somewhere unknown.

When I came here (for 9 months) I was thinking about how to adapt to a new reality that is so different then this in Poland. It is not only the nature environment but also people, different language, different architecture, way of moving on the street, shops, way of thinking. It is a lot to get to know and I have only one recommendation: go explore!

Below you can find some tips from me that might be useful if you want to explore the neighbourhood.

During exploring, it’s a good idea to have a plan. If you did not have an occation to check the map before you came here I will share with you some places that I explored during my first weeks.

Observatorio des aves     Sanctuary of Christ the King    Cova da Piedade

However, I have never stick to that plan.. If I may suggest something to you: when you notice something interesting that may take you away from a plan, go for it. Sometimes it is even better to change your plan.

Another thing that is really important: bring water with yourself. Especially during summer days it might be exhausting to go in full sun and what is more and you need to remember: there are a lot of hills here (were comfortable shoes)

During your exploration take your time. You may stop for a coffee and pasteis de nata in some pastelaria or sit on a bench on a square…and observe daily life.  And even though you não falas português, you can listen to conversations between people and get used to it. You may also make some notes about your observations. After a few months you may forget what surprised you in this neighbourhood.

And I almost forget. I think other volunteers will not be against taking them with you. 🙂

Have fun,  don’t forget to turn on your GPS and check map from time to time. Don`t get lost  🙂
