The series that brought me here

Many times, we watch series and movies as something to spend time and entertain ourselves with and others as tools to practice a language that we are learning or that we already know, but today I would like to talk about another function that is to discover ourselves new Languages.

As I have already mentioned on another occasion, whenever I can, I try to watch series and movies in their original language, I mean the language in which they were shot and not only in English, so I have seen some in French, German … but if I had to highlight one was the series I saw in Portuguese.

Although it is true that the series was Brazilian and not Portuguese, my inexperienced ears did not notice any difference, which now I have been told exists between the way of speaking of one and the other. The series was not the best I had seen, you could notice that the budget was not very high, but there was something about the way the characters expressed themselves that appealed to me, so I kept watching it. I have been watching it throughout all it seasons until this summer when finally ended.

I suppose that you can imagine that it is no coincidence that I chose Portugal as a destination for my volunteering and is that one of the extra reasons that this destination gives me was the possibility of learning that language that had conquered me several years ago.

The main reason for this post is to recommend that you give a chance to series and films even if they are not in your language or in English since you never know what they can awaken in you and how far they can take you.

If anyone is in doubt, the series that I’m talking about is 3% which is a thriller set in a world sharply divided between progress and devastation, where people are given the chance to make it to the “better side” but only 3% of the candidates succeed. This is one of the first series that Netflix shot in a different language than English and if someone asks me, I always recommend it.
