the books that brought me here

Last week I told you about the series that made me want to learn Portuguese, but this was not the only reason that made me want to come to Portugal and today I want to talk to you about the books that made me want to know Portugal.

I am a person who really likes to read and it is strange when I am not with a book,so books are very important to me. I usually read fantasy or science fiction and one of the things that I like the most is to know the world that they have created for that story and discover what it is like, but from time to time I also like to read more realistic books and that allows me to know new corners of our world and sometimes pique my  interest in them.

A few years ago, a friend recommended me a Portuguese author who he had liked a lot and specifically a series of books that he had found very interesting, how we usually like the same books, I trusted his opinion and I was right. The author is José Rodrigues dos Santos and the books are the series of Tomas Noronha, a university professor hired to investigate different cases.

You can notice that the author is a journalist since, in my opinion, the best thing about his books is the description of the places that makes you want to know more about them and get to know them, fortunately it is possible.

These readings increased my interest in Portugal and made me want to know it, not as something general if not as specific places that I wanted to visit and when I considered the possibility of volunteering, they came to my mind, making me decide on Portugal.

Some of these places are in my top of places to know about Portugal and as soon as I have the opportunity, I am sure that I will visit them. Some of them are:

  • Sintra: although it is true that I have already visited Sintra (a place that I love and to which I am looking forward to returning), I have not had the opportunity to visit the main place that attracted me from there, Quinta da Regaleira which description and all its history seemed fascinating to me from the first moment.
  • Coimbra: hometown of the protagonist of the books and a city with a lot of history and tourist attraction, without a doubt one of the places that I most want to know.
  • Lisbon: the only place on this list that I have been able to visit at the moment (although I have not yet been able to visit all the places I want) and it has satisfied all my expectations, it has something special in every corner you visit and without a doubt the descriptions in the books they were spot on.

These are just some of my favourite places that appear in the books and the ones that I most want to know, but there are many more.

Finally, by way of conclusion, my recommendation is that you try to find these books that make you want to know new places and that not only give you a good story.
