Exploring Algarve – the region of the most beautiful beaches

Last week Monya (the volunteer from Jordan) and I planned a spontaneous trip to Lagos, Algarve. Whenever I found out that I would become a RATO volunteer, I immediately put the Algarve region on my list of the must-visit places. What attracts me to this region the most, is its specific landscape with the cliffs that are honey sand colored.

Lagos has a long and storied history, dating back to Roman times. It played a crucial role during the Age of Discovery in the 15th century when Portuguese explorers embarked on voyages to explore unknown lands. Lagos was the home port for many of these expeditions, including those led by Henry the Navigator.

Lagos boasts some of the most stunning coastline in Portugal, with dramatic cliffs, hidden coves, and golden sandy beaches. Praia Dona Ana and Praia do Camilo are two popular beaches known for their crystal-clear waters and impressive rock formations.

We went to three different beaches – Praia Dona Ana, Praia dos Estudantes and a little less known one, which is Praia do Pinhão. Each of them was outstanding in some way and definitely worth seeing.

Except for the beaches, we got to see the Old Town of Lagos, whose narrow streets were filled with music. Despite the hot temperature reaching 35 Celcius degrees, the atmosphere there was amazing and we enjoyed our trip a lot.
