Epilogue to chapter “Portugal”

One of my last days here. It’s impossible not to feel sentimental or nostalgic, for even though it’s been only two months here, they were so rich and passed by so fast as a result of it.

Reflecting upon everything, I have to state that it’s the ordinary things and overall routine which I will miss the most. Evening/night talks with my flatmates and fellow volunteers: Guilia, Sofia, Martins, and Simon, our film watchalongs and trips. What brought me a lot of joy was walking to the office in the morning or office coffee breaks – good weather added a lot to both of these activities. I´m also a bit sad that I won’t be able to take a ride by ferry to Lisbon or to greet our neighbour’s cat, chilling in the balcony window (every time I got the opportunity). I saw plenty of beautiful sunsets, tried so many different desserts, reunited with my amazing friends, and met wonderful new people.

Those of you who know me well enough know how much I love films… I guess for that reason, I decided to write these last paragraphs as some sort of closing monologue in the final moments of a movie.

As one adventure comes to an end, we just have to find another to keep ourselves busy. We have to keep moving. Sometimes, not knowing the next stop on our journey can be a nice surprise. I am not going to lie, especially in moments like these, the weight of adult life is really sensible. You struggle, and you wish to have someone to tell you what to do, to plan your life for you. On the other hand, it’s so liberating (also scary) to take full responsibility and make your own decisions. Because the truth is, you can do almost anything – (yeah, there are limitations… but you get the point).

I learned that, in general, we are our worst enemies – sadly, it’s mostly yourself who is stopping you. Lately, there are more and more surreal moments when my life feels like a dream (a lot of my deep desires, hopes, and wishes are coming to fruition). I guess I just want to encourage myself or anyone who reads this to keep dreaming/manifesting and working towards their goals.

I read somewhere that we are constantly surrounded by past dreams, ideas, and thoughts of people who, at a certain moment, decided to bring them to life, whether it’s inventions, art, buildings…

So keep your dreams, because the world and people around us are proof that they really do come true!

* Fade to black.

* End credits start rolling – after they finish and before this chapter fades into haze of the past: sign “TO BE CONTINUED” appears.

Thank you!
