Hello, world! I hope you’re okay! The subject I’m highlighting today is my work in the organization and especially the workshops I attend to.
Yesterday, I went to a workshop with Nuno and I was shocked to see how teachers are involved with student problems like racism, religion, and other kind of discrimination.
In fact, usually we prepare workshops and often it’s about discrimination and prejudices. One of workshop that we do the most it’s this one when Nuno put a picture of a man on the floor and ask to students to put red paper if they think that he is a bad person and a green paper if they think that it’s a good person. Then Nuno put other paper on the floor with others indications about this man, for example if he is muslim or if he is a migrant, and he asks them to do the same exercise with red or green paper. Then, Nuno shows them a video of this man when he makes jokes about conversion of muslims to christianity and another video where he apologies and explaining his behaviour. Everytime, at every steps, students are supposed to do the green and red exercise. I think that the goal of this kind of workshop is to break out of our prejudicies.
Yesterday, students were particularly involved and sensitive on this subject which is discrimination, they talked and they gave their opinion. I don’t know, but maybe they were that sensitive and involved because they are students with special needs. It was very interesting to see reactions even if I didn’t understand a lot. We were supposed to do another session but students and teachers thought that it was really important to do this kind of workshop and to speak about it. They wanted to continue the workshop and to do a presentation about this subject. That’s why I saw how they were smart students with a lots of things to say. Indeed, some of them did a presentation about discrimination like racism, religion or disabled person. Of course, I didn’t understand everything because my portuguese is still bad but fortunately they projected a slideshow on the board with scriptures. My understanding in portuguese is better at writing so I did my best to read on the slide. Thanks to the slides and thanks to Nuno, I understood that they were talking about kind of discrimination like racism («racismo»), religion («religião»), someone with problems for exemple to speak («deficiências»). It was an emotional moment because I understood that they live this kind of discrimination in their daily life. Also, they made an exercise for us: they give us a plastic glass empty and then the same plastic glass but with a lots of little pebbles inside to show us how much the weight changed. I understood this exercise in two differents ways: first, to show the weight of discrmination or to show solidarity because when we are together we can be stronger. It was a really moved presentation and I liked it a lot even with the difference of the language.
Then, a teacher, who I think was their first theacher, spoke to talked about discrimination and about her students. She was really moved and I understood that these students are really importants to her and also that this teacher is really important for this students. I saw with this workshop how much this teacher, and I think it’s the case of others teachers, can be involved in problems of the students and how much she takes care of them. It was very moving and I think it was one of the more moving experience I did here for now.
Take care of yourself and remember that together we are stronger! See you soon world!
