Voluntering – II : What It Is Not

Olá a Todos!

This is the second part of the series about volunteering through my eyes, or let´s say my thoughts.

I will not write the complete opposite phrases of the words and sentences in the first part of the series that is mentioned what is volunteering, but I will add really fresh and actual situations. Would like to want me to chop my words and start? =)

What is not volunteering?

Volunteering is NOT:

– always fun

– a vacation opportunity,

– a gap year entertainment,

– a facility that you “only” come to rehab yourself after a break up,

– a way of escaping from your environment where you live,

– a place or a thing that people serve for your comfort,

a tool that makes you able to disrespect others,

– an agent that enables you to make troubles for others,

– a device that you can always choose what to do or not to do,

– an instrument that gives you rights to be absent and go to have fun,

– an abode which you can lie and manipulate people,

– a space you can fulfill your desires,

– a location to learn surfing =)

– an atmosphere that you can dictate your sick ideas,

– a right that you can destroy or harm the materials,

BUT

– a gap year opportunity to evolve, involve and develop by helping others,

– sacrificing time to increase your awareness and expand your capabilities,

– adding people into your book for your life-long friendship,

– create solutions when you have difficulties in another country,

– growing abilities to deal with the time in hardness,

– missing your loved ones and endure, instead of running away…

If you only come for the reasons I counted here and at the first article, then you probably will have really difficult times during your time. If you do not come here with clear mind, after 2-3 months, you will feel homesick, depressed, lonely, start to argue with others, procrastinate your work and make other people the same. At first, it is really fun meeting new people, especially other volunteers at home, and go out with them. However, if they arrived a few months earlier than you, they are going to stop going out because they are fed up, or they will go out with other friends, and you will fed up in the end as well. You will go out and meet other people but you will not satisfied since your mind is not clear.

So, that will lead you to feel under or unappreciated about what are you doing if you do not have things to do or your own hobbies. I mean, you should not bring your suitcase with full of problems, but full of ideas and good attitude seeking for nice experiences on this journey by helping others. Otherwise, what will most probably happen is similar what I have written above according to my solid and unbiased experience. So dear volunteer, come and bring your shine, your good energy, open mind, full of love in heart and a big smile on face =)

Até a Próxima Malta!

Fica Bem.
