Cidade De Almada – 50 Anos

Olááá a todos!

Espero tudo bem contigo!

Today, I will write about a city that has been in my mind since last summer, even I created a document in my folders but could not publish the article. So, Almada is the city (and the municipality) where we are located on the other side of the Targus River, called Margem Sul, South Bank or coast in English. Even if local people say it is not Lisbon, it is only 10 minutes ferry ride away and is in Lisbon Metropolitan Area.

I will give you a fun fact: Almost all the words started with “al” are Arabic. As long as I know, ‘al’ is article like ‘the’. So the city name actually almádena ‘ore mine’ (from Arabic al-ma??den). The word exists in Turkish as well, ‘maden’ means mine. Why is that because Muslims some hundreds years ago invaded and colonised Portugal. At that time, they constructed a fort at Almada to control the entrance to the Tagus River.

In 1973, Almada became a city from a town with the demographic growth and the urbanization. In 1976, two years later after the 25 April 1974 revolution, the first local elections were held in Almada. So, as it is stated in the webpage of Câmara Municipal de Almada, 50 years of City, 50 years of Freedom.

Last summer, there had been many activities such as concerts, dance demonstrations and many more. I also had been in those and had great time.

I really like the graphics of 50 years and this is the kind of monument takes place in just next to the São João Baptista tram stop. In the night, the colors are really pleasant.

Almada: 50 years of City, 50 years of Freedom!!

Fica Bem!

Até a Próxima!
