WEEKLY REPORT 04: CHRISTMAS

Not much in terms of work this week.

Finished researching stuff for the game and, after a few meetings with the other people involved in the project, started working towards a playable prototype.

Due to it being Christmas week, we found ourselves with more free time than expected. I decided to wander around the local area and ended up in Capuchos, a little mountain settlement at the center of Almada.

There’s nothing necessarily significant about this location – it just happens to be the last stop on my journey for the day. Originally I set out with the intention of reaching the Atlantic coast by foot, which would more or less take me to Costa de Caparica. The reason I stopped at Capuchos, though, was because I stumbled upon a cliffside vista of this original destination. It was a beautiful sight, which on my way further from it led me to an equally beautiful convent.

I’ve often been fascinated by smaller and more remote places precisely because of lesser-known landmarks like this, and I think this seemingly random discovery just helped highlight to me how much more authentic and interesting exploration like this can be. I encourage everyone to try it sometime, at least as long as you possess a little bit of patience and keep your expectations tempered, as it’s more about the beauty of the mundane process of traveling and exploring, rather than the goal of actually finding something.

On Christmas I spent time with Savas. We walked around town at night, observing the locals on their way to midnight mass, and sharing in our past holiday experiences. I hadn’t personally intended to celebrate Christmas, but our outing felt like a great marking of the occasion.
